Functional tests are tests which indicate how well the body's systems are functioning.  They help a practitioner identify deficiencies, excesses and imbalances which may underlie health difficulties, prevent recovery or increase disease risk. The test may involve taking a saliva, blood, urine or stool sample for laboratory analysis.  Tests can either be taken at home or in the nutrition clinic, but some samples will require blood to be drawn by a nurse or phlebotomist.  All analysis are performed at reputable laboratories in the UK.

Functional tests may be used to asses:

  • Nutrient status
  • Gut microflora balance/overgrowth
  • Digestive function
  • Parasites/persistent infections
  • Sex hormones
  • Adrenal or thyroid hormone status
  • Metabolism
  • Toxic burden
  • Osteoporosis risk
  • Food intolerances and allergies
  • Cardiovascular risk

I will only recommend private functional tests when considered absolutely necessary as they can be costly, but of great value to inform clinical decisions.  Clients will receive a full report of the test results, and interpretation and advice will be provided at the nutritional clinic.

Companies I use for functional tests include:
Genova Diagnostics

Regenerus Laboratories
23andme

Lorisian Food Intolerance Test

York Food Intolerance Test
